859,815. Centrifugal pumps, blowers and compressors. BOHMANN, W. March 27, 1957 [March 31, 1956], No. 10023/57. Class 110 (1). The camber line of an impeller blade for a pump, blower or compressor is curved forwardly at the entry end in relation to the form necessary for shock-free entry. This gives a point of inflection at X. The increase in relative flow velocity at the entry end due to the forward curvature prevents or reduces the formation of a turbulent zone due to the flow leaving the rear face of the blade. In the example shown, the turbulent zone is confined to the region of the trailing edge of the blade. The resultant reduction of losses more than compensates for any additional losses through departure from shock-free entry. The blade may be of laminar instead of aerofoil form. The amount of forward curvature, or the blade length over which the forward curvature occurs, may increase from the back-plate of the impeller to the coverplate.
