Abstract
859,448. Coating with metals. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd., KAY, S. E., and BALL, R. J. March 4, 1959 [March 11, 1958], No. 7822/58 Class 82(2) [Also in Group XXIX] A process of depositing metal upon a surface comprises injecting a metal depositing solution and a reducing solution into a mixing chamber at controlled rates, intimately mixing the streams within the chamber and expelling the solution from the chamber to the surface before appreciable reduction of the metal has occurred. As shown, the two solutions are supplied through conduits 12 to unions 11, the rates of flow being controlled by the sizes of nozzles 14 in jet members 9 and by the back pressure created in chamber 1 by compressed air supplied via conduit 18. The mixed solutions form a shallow pool 19 covering the top surface of wad 4 of stainless steel wool, through which the mixture is forced to delivery orifice 6 and to the treated surface 22. In a modification the wad 4 may be replaced by a bed of small glass balls. A complex silver ammonia or copper ammonia solution may be used in combination with a reducing solution.
