Abstract

859,359. Heating and cooling granular materials. LINK-BELT CO. June 26, 1959, No. 22062/59. Class 64(2) Solids, such as soyabean meal, detergents, sugar, ores or chemicals, from a shoot 46 are passed by a double helix 52 in the reduced end of a rotated drum 14 to the interior of the drum and they are passed through this by spaced hollow flights 54 of chordal form, Fig. 3, to the reduced, discharge end of the drum which has a double helix with scooping flanges 76 in the conical connecting portion 34. The bottom of the drum 14 is immersed in heating or cooling liquid in a tank 10. To replace vapour lost through an outlet 42, further liquid may be added through an inlet 12. The liquid supply may be continuous in which case an outlet is provided at the solids-feeding end. Liquid is scooped into the flights 54 through openings 64 in the drum wall adjacent the leading ends of the flights. Openings 66 at the trailing ends, fitted wth plugs each chosen according to the size of an orifice through it, slowly release some of the liquid as the drum rotates. The remainder of the liquid is carried over and discharges back to the tank 10 through the openings 64 as the flights descend.
