Abstract

A polysiloxane containing an alkaline catalyst is stabilised by contacting it with an ion exchange resin containing sulphonic acid groups, the resin being used in amount sufficient to remove the alkali from the siloxane. The siloxanes may contain alkyl, alkenyl, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or halogenated hydrocarbon radicals. The process is preferably effected by adding the siloxane to a suspension of the ion exchange resin, e.g. a sulphonated polystyrene or phenolaldehyde resin, in a solvent for the siloxane, e.g. acetone or toluene. Catalysts, e.g. alkali metal hydroxides; Li Na, K and Cs silanolates; quarternary ammonium hydroxides and quarternary ammonium salts of silanols, can be removed in the above manner. Examples are given.
