Abstract

859,193. Testing balance of wheels. LAYCOCK ENGINEERING Ltd. Oct. 7, 1958 [Jan. 17, 1958], No. 1634/58. Class 106 (2). [Also in Groups XXII and XXXIV] A wheel-supporting flange 10 for a wheelbalancing machine is formed with a number of radial recesses 11 each slidably housing an insert 12 adapted to be attached to the wheel to be supported, an aperture 16 in the base of each recess 11 and screws 14 for clamping each insert in any position along the length of the recess, each insert 12 being formed with an index mark 19 adapted to be set against graduations 18 on the face of the flange 10. The recesses 11 are slightly greater in depth than the inserts 12 each of which is formed with two tapped holes 17 to accommodate wheel studs so that each setting of the inserts 12 deals with two sizes of pitch circle for a wheel. Each index mark 19 is on the centre line of a tapped hole 13 in which the screw 14 is received. Further subdivision of the range of sizes may be made by the use of a second index mark 21. The inserts 12 are interchangeable so that different inserts may be used for different wheel studs. The wheel 20 is secured by nuts 25 to the flange 10 which is secured by tapped holes 23 to the balancing- machine. In a modification the radial recesses extend to the periphery of the flange to allow the inserts to protrude from the flange to avoid the flange becoming too cumbersome when used for wheels having a large pitch circle.
