Wire coils 1 are removed from the hooks 2 of an overhead conveyer by a device 3 which transfers them to pins 5 mounted in a turret 6 which is rotated intermittently through 90 degrees to position each pin in turn at the transfer station, where it receives a group of, for example, six coils, a second station where the coils are weighed, a third station where the coils are bundled and a discharge station where the bundle of coils is removed by a lifting truck 22. Each pin 5 is swung upwardly as it approaches the transfer stations to facilitate transfer of the coils is then returned to the horizontal position. At the third station the axis of each group of coils is aligned with that of the associated pin by means of a verticallymovable support 14, and the group of coils is then compressed between a plate 8 surrounding the pin and a head 11 actuated by a hydraulic or mechanical press 10. The compressed group is then secured by the manual application of two ties 17, each tie, Fig. 2, comprising hooks 18, 19 which engage the end coils and are adjustably interconnected by a chain 21. The plate 8 and head 11 are formed with peripheral notches 12 to facilitate the application of the ties.
