Abstract

858,797. Expanding wheel gearing. LOMAS, A. E. Jan. 14, 1957 [Jan. 13, 1956; Jan. 17, 1956; Jan. 26, 1956; March 28, 1956], Nos. 1211/66, 1494/56, 2547/56 and 9631/56. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3). One flange of a variable-speed V-pulley is moved axially by the application of first or second brakes which produce relative axial movements of an outer sleeve connected to the flange and an inner sleeve rotatable, on but axially held with respect to the pulley mounting shaft. An expanding V-belt pulley driven by a shaft 2 comprises a half pulley 1a fixed to the shaft and having a boss 3 on which a second half pulley 16 is axially slidable but is restrained against rotation by a key 6. An externally threaded brake sleeve 8 is rotatably mounted on the shaft and is held in abutment with the boss 3 by a collar 9 fixed to the shaft. Collars 10 and 11 are rigid with the ends of the sleeve 8, the collar 10 forming a journal for a brake drum 13 having a boss 27 provided with internal splines 26 in engagement with splines 25 on an internally threaded sleeve 19. This sleeve 19 is held against the end of the boss 5 of pulley half 16 by a cover 21 having a frictional driving means 24, the pressure on which is adjustable by screws 22 and a resilient washer 23. A second brake drum 14 is rigid with the inner sleeve 8 and is in driving relation with the collar 9 by a similar frictional driving means 17. To adjust the pulley 1a, 1b when running, a brake is applied to either drum 13 or 14 to retard the outer or inner screwed sleeve and so produce axial movement of the pulley half 16. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the brake drums are free on the sleeves and are engaged on commencement of braking by pawls moved into positive engagement with slots in the sleeves. Specifications 858,798 and 858,799 are referred to.
