Abstract
An organophilic cation-modified clay is produced by reacting a suspension of a natural silicate clay, having a base exchange capacity of 20 to 25 milliequivalents per 100 grams of clay in the form of particles less than 5 microns, preferably less than 1 micron, with a salt of a base having in the cation at least one organic radical covalently attached to a polyvalent atom, thereby imparting to the clay particles a substantial gel characteristic in liquid paraffin. Suitable substances are amine and quaternary ammonium salts and similar compounds having arsenic, antimony, tellurium, oxygen, or sulphur in place of the nitrogen atom. Preferably the organic radical has at least 10 carbon atoms in a straight chain or at least 6 carbon atoms in a ring as in cyclohexane. The clay suspension may either be in an aqueous or organic liquid medium. In a modification of the process the clay is first reacted with a mineral acid to convert it to the hydrogen form, and is then reacted with a base capable of forming a salt as specified above. A preferred clay is Sepiolite. In examples dimethyl dioctadecylammonium chloride and cyclohexylamine are employed to modify sepiolite. Specification 664,830 is referred to.
