[Also in Group XIII] Natural or synthetic threads, strands, filaments or fibres in parallel arrangement are treated with a liquid medium, while passing over a roller, passed through a drying chamber through which heated air passes in one direction only and in which they follow a tortuous path, and delivered to a rotary receiving means. As shown, Fig. 1, warp threads 2 are drawn from a creel frame 1, through a reed 3, and under a guide roller 4, to a roller 5 engaging a roller 6 in a sizing bath 7. The threads travel thence under a guide roller 8, and through a drying unit 9 and a reed 10, and are wound on a cylinder or similar element of a warping machine; they may alternatively pass over a driven roller 10a. Condensate from the unit 9 may be led to a jacket 12 around the bath 7, which may also, or alternatively, be otherwise heated. The roller 5 may be given a lateral axial movement to roll the size on to the threads. The unit 9, of heat-insulating material, has a chamber 15 furnished with slots such as 22 in its opposite walls for ingress and egress of the web of threads, rollers 23 opposite the slots, and rollers 21 and two rollers at the top and three at the bottom of the chamber, over which the web is festooned. A fan 16 circulates air through a side chamber 14, over a heater unit 17, through a distributing grid 35, and thence downwardly through the chamber 15 and a second grid 35 back to the fan. The chamber contains vertical baffles between which the web passes. Hot air jets may also be caused to impinge on the web in the chamber. The rollers 21, 23, and a central baffle, comprise a unit 26 which is mounted on a spindle 27 which carries a rack 31 engaged by a handoperated pinion 33 and is supported by rollers 28, 29. This enables the unit 26 to be displaced outside the chamber 15 (the side wall of which is removable), and, on engagement of the pinion 33 with grooves 32 in the spindle, to be turned to horizontal position for ready positioning of the web around the rollers.
