Abstract
The invention comprises dipyridyl derivatives of the formula: <FORM:0857501/IV(b)/1> wherein R represents a branched or unbranched, saturated or unsaturated alkyl radical located at positions 4 or 5, and 41 or 51 and X stands for an anionic radical, such as chloride, bromide, iodide and p-toluenesulphonate radicals. The novel compounds may be prepared by interaction of the corresponding di-substituted a , a 1-dipyridyl with an ethylene glycol di-ester. The reaction may be effected by heating the reagents together alone or in the presence of an inert solvent or diluent, for example nitrobenzene or b -ethoxyethanol. Certain of the new dipyridyl derivatives may be obtained by reacting a salt of the formula: <FORM:0857501/IV(b)/2> in which Y is an anionic radical with a salt derived from an anionic radical X, e.g., silver iodide, or silver chloride. The new compounds may be used in herbicidal compositions.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions contain, as the active herbicidal ingredient, one or more dipyridyl derivatives of the formula: <FORM:0857501/VI/1> wherein R stands for a branched or unbranched saturated or unsaturated alkyl radical located at positions 4 or 5 and 41 or 51, and X stands for an anionic radical such as chlorine, bromine, iodine or p-toluensulphonate radicals. (For preparation see Group IV(b)). The compositions may be liquid compositions, for example aqueous solutions of the active ingredients. Wetting agents such as alkali metal salts of dinaphthylmethane disulphonic acids, alkali metal salts of long chain aliphatic sulphates, and condensation products of ethylene oxide with an alkyl phenol, and/or humectants, for example, calcium chloride, glycerol, ethylene glycol and water-soluble polyethylene glycols, may be present. Agents which improve the adhering properties of the composition to the plant, such as sodium carboxymethylcellulose and ammonium polymethacrylate may also be present. The compositions may also be solids containing inert pulverulent diluents such as talc, china clay, gypsum, basic slag, kieselguhr, bentonite or other colloidal clays.
