Abstract
Linear polyamides containing recurring structural units-HN(CH2)6 CO-are made by heating at a temperature above 240 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure, a pre-polyamide made by heating a linear aliphatic ester of 7-amino heptanoic acid or a phenyl ether ester of 7-aminoheptanoic acid or mixtures thereof with branched chain aliphatic or cycloaliphatic esters of 7-aminoheptanoic acid with at least a molar equivalent of water at a temperature below 200 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure while passing a stream of inert gas through the reaction mixture. Viscosity stabilizers e.g. benzoic, stearic, p-toluic, adipic, sebacic, glutaric and pimelic acid and ethyl 6-cyanohexanoate, ethyl 7-benzamidoheptanoate, ethyl 7-acetamidoheptanoate and ethyl 7-toluamido heptanoate may be present in the reaction mixture. In the examples, polyamides are made from (1) and (2) ethyl 7-aminoheptanoate, (3) and (10) ethyl 7-aminoheptanoate and as stabilizers p-toluic acid, sebacic acid, dimethyl adipate, ethyl 7-benzamidoheptanoate, ethyl 7-acetamido heptanoate, ethyl- (p-toluamido)heptanoate or ethyl 6-cyanohexanoate (4) npropyl 7-aminoheptanoate, (5) n-butyl (7-aminoheptanoate), (6) 1-phenylethyl7-aminoheptanoate, (7) and (8) isopropyl 7-aminoheptanoate and ethyl (7-aminoheptanoate) and (9) 1-phenylethyl, n-propyl, ethyl, n-butyl and iso-propyl 7-aminoheptanoate with prepolymers made from ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl and 1-phenylethyl 7-aminoheptanoate.ALSO:Polyamide prepolymers comprising a mixture of unreacted 7-amino-heptanoic acid ester, 7-aminoheptanoic acid and a polyamide having a reduced viscosity lower than 0,7 at a concentration of 0,2 gms. of the polyamide in solution in 100 mls. of a 3 : 2 by weight mixture of phenol and tetrachloroethane are made by heating a linear aliphatic ester of 7-aminoheptanoic acid or a phenyl ethyl ester of 7-aminoheptanoic acid or mixtures thereof with branched chain aliphatic or cycloaliphatic esters of 7-aminoheptanoic acid with at least a molar equivalent of water at a temperature below 200 DEG C. and at atmospheric pressure while passing a stream of inert gas through the reaction mixture. In the Examples, prepolymers are made from :-(1), (2) and (9) ethyl 7-aminoheptanoate, (3) and (10) ethyl 7-aminoheptanoate and various stabilisers, (4) and (9) n-propyl 7-aminoheptanoate, (5) and (9) n-butyl 7-aminoheptanoate, (6) and (9) 1-phenyl ethyl 7-aminoheptanoate and (7) isopropyl 7-aminoheptanoate and ethyl 7-amino heptanoate.
