Abstract

1281998 Condensation polymers BP CHEMICALS Ltd 12 Dec 1969 [15 Jan 1969] 2404/69 Heading C3R A thermoplastic material is made by condensing in an inert atmosphere at 130‹ C. a tetracarboxylic acid A where n is 2 or 3 with one or more compounds C having molecules containing 2-4 functional groups attached to aliphatic C atoms; these groups are OH and/or amine groups. Compound C may be difunctional; there may be 1 or 2 moles of C per mole acid A. The 2 moles of C may contain 1 mole diamine and 1 mole dihydroxy compound. Compound C may be a hydroxyamine. The condensation may be performed in the presence of diphenyl ether, and of a tertiary amine base as catalyst. The amine salt may be formed initially from A and C and then used in the condensation reaction.
