Abstract

A block of radiation shielding material of density at least 150 lbs. per cub. ft. is made by compressing a mixture of a dense material and a binder at a pressure of at least 1,000 lbs. per sq. in. The dense material from which the block is made is, for example, barytes, iron grit, iron shot, magnetite, witherite, calcined magnesite, haematite, limonite, ilmenite, galena, whinstone, copper refinery slag, or steel punchings; mica or vermiculite may also be included. The binder may be cement and also present may be a pectate, oleate, fatty acid amine, amide, or silicone. Up to 10% of water containing a wetting agent may be added. The blocks absorb gamma radiation and fast neutrons, and may be used for biological shields for nuclear reactors or for protection against radioactive isotopes or X-rays.
