Abstract

856,418. Combustible gas. KOPPERS G.m.b.H., H. April 1, 1957 [April 16, 1956], No. 10590/57. Addition to 787,829. Drawings to Specification. Class 55 (2). In a modification of the process of the parent Specification for producing gases containing gaseous hydrocarbons of low molecular weight from liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons of high molecular weight the reaction mixture resulting from thermal conversion of the starting material in a reaction zone in the presence of a hot vaporous or gaseous heat carrier is cooled by direct contact with water and freed from tar vapours and conducted through a waste heat boiler at a temperature between 140‹ and 150‹ C. wherein preheated water is evaporated at a reduced pressure and the reaction mixture cooled to a temperature below 100‹ C., the steam produced at reduced pressure being superheated to 120‹ C. and compressed to atmospheric pressure or slightly above before being heated to reaction temperature, preferably about 1200‹ C., and introduced into the reaction zone as heat carrier for further quantities of high molecular weight hydrocarbons. The cooling by direct contact with water reduces the temperature to between 200‹ and 250‹ C. from 800-850‹ C. and the tar is removed in an electrostatic precipitator. The water evaporated in the waste heat boiler is preferably taken from a separating vessel in which is collected condensate containing oils and water condensing in the waste heat boiler and a final cooler for the reaction mixture.
