Abstract
D (-)-a -hydroxy-b , b -dimethyl-a -butyrolactone is obtained from racemic a , g -dihydroxy-b , b -dimethyl-butyramide by reacting 1-brucine with with racemic a , g -dihydroxy-b , b -dimethyl butyramide in an inert solvent, recovering from the resulting reaction mixture a complex of 1-brucine-D (-) p -a -hydroxy-b , b -dimethyl-a -butyrolactone and obtaining D (-) -a -hydroxy-b , b -dimethyl-g -butyrolactone from said complex, e.g. the complex may be reacted with a base thereby forming D (+)-sodium pantoate which is then treated with an acid.
