Abstract

In the separation of straight chain hydrocarbons from mixtures thereof with other hydrocarbons by contacting in the liquid phase with a molecular sieve which selectively absorbs straight chain hydrocarbons, the sieve is desorbed by contacting with a straight chain hydrocarbon having a higher boiling point than any component of the feed mixture in the liquid phase. Preferably after the absorption step non-absorbed liquid is removed from the sieve by a strippant liquid which differs in boiling point both from the feed and the desorbing liquid and which is itself not absorbed on the sieve. In order to separate both n-olefines and n-paraffins from a feed, two beds of sieve are used olefine being absorbed in the first and desorbed by a higher olefine and paraffin being absorbed in the second and desorbed by a higher paraffin. Reference is made to the separation of n-heptene andt n heptane from toluene, desorption being effecedrespectively by n-dodecene and n-dodecane with cumene being used as the intermediate strippant liquid.
