A mixture of hydrocarbons on passing through a molecular sieve gives an effluent free of aromatic, hydrocarbons, the feed being discontinued at about aromatic breakthrough and the adsorbent desorbed with an aromatic stream which may be from a previous desorption phase to give an effluent of non-aromatic hydrocarbons and finally a gaseous desorbent is used to obtain a pure aromatic effluent Toluene and xylene are exemplified, while the separation of benzene from hexane or a naphtha fraction is disclosed using benzene as the first desorbent and ammonia or carbon dioxide as the second desorbent. The second gaseous desorbent may also be H 2 S, SO 2 or organic amines, nitriles, nitrates and halides or other small highly polar molecules. Zeolite X is disclosed as being suitable for use. The adsorption cycle may be at 100-800 ‹F., 0À5-100 p.s.i.a. and at a rate of 0À1-10 w/w./hr. whilst the two desorption phases may also be worked under the same conditions. The amount of aromatic desorbate recycled may be equal to the non- aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed on the sieve. A continuous operation may be achieved by having two or more adsorption columns which are operated cyclically.
