Abstract

856,117. Travelling-wave tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 20, 1959 [April 24, 1958], No. 13119/58. Class 39(1). An electron beam focusing structure particularly for a travelling-wave tube consists of a positive periodic structure 4, Fig. 4 positioned between a pair of negative plates 5, and 6, plate 5 being slightly more negative than plate 6. The strip beam 20 follows the undulatory path shown with one set of peaks being disposed in the slots in the periodic structure. Two series of pins 15, Fig. 2, extending through the slots of the periodic structure may be provided on the plate 5 to prevent lateral dispersion of the beam. The plates 5, 6 form the ridges of a ridged rectangular wave-guide 1. The travelling-wave tube described is of the backwardwave type. The elements of the periodic structure may be the turns of a helix, the teeth of one or more comb-like structures, or the rungs of a ladder. With a helix structure, a rod or tubular member is provided within the helix and a tubular member outside it. The beam is annular and travels in the space between the helix and one of the tubular member.
