Abstract

855,928. Magnetic separators. THOMA, J. U. Aug. 1, 1958 [Aug. 2, 1957], No. 24541/57. Class 117 A magnetic separator for the extraction of impurities from fluids such as lubricating oils and coolants is provided with a magnetic element comprising a brass or other non-magnetic tube 1 which contains a series of permanent magnets 2 with like poles opposing each other and separated by pole pieces 3. There is an air gap between the magnets and the inside wall of the tube but the pole pieces fit closely or with an interference fit in the tube. A tube 7 of non-magnetizable material has groups of perforations 12 at each end and, in combination with the tube 1, forms a sedimentation chamber of annular crosssection. The space 8 provided between the perforated tube 7 and the outer casing 6 of the separator is divided into upper and lower compartments by a washer 9. Longitudinal guide ribs 13 may be provided to cause axial flow of the fluid. The continuity of the edge of each pole piece disc may be broken to produce a concentration of magnetic field at separated areas of the tube 1, and the air gaps between the magnets and the tube may be completely or partly filled by material such as cardboard, plastic, or brass, preferably in the form of sleeves.
