Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0855862/IV(b)/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom having an atomic number of at least 17 or an alkoxy group having not more than six carbon atoms, R1 and R2 are alkyl groups having not more than six carbon atoms and n is an integer from two to six, their acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts and the preparation thereof by heating an appropriate nuclear-substituted or unsubstituted xanthylidene-9-acetic acid with an aminoalkyl halide R1R2N (CnH2n) Hal wherein Hal is a halogen atom, in the presence of an acid acceptor, and, if desired, neutralizing the basic ester with an acid to form the acid addition salt or reacting it with an alkyl or aralkyl halide to form the quaternary ammonium salt.
