Abstract

4-Nitro-diarylamines are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula: <FORM:0855719/IV(b)/1> where R1 represents a chlorine or bromine atom and R2 represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom with an N-acylated amine of the formula R1R2NH where R1 represents a formyl or acetyl group and R2 represents a phenyl, nitrophenyl, a -naphthyl or toluyl group, at a temperature between 150 and 250 DEG C. and in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor. The reaction is preferably carried out at 180 DEG -220 DEG C. using potassium carbonate as hydrogen halide acceptor and copper, copper halides or copper oxides may be added as catalyst and solvents such as xylene or nitrobenzene used. The acylamine may be formed in situ from the amine and acid. Examples are given. Specification 24869/1902 is referred to.
