Abstract
Glass or mineral fibres having an alkali content of 5-20% are coated with a hardenable compound containing epoxy groups. Compounds specified are reaction products of epichlorhydrin with monohydric or polyhydric phenols or mono- or -poly-thiophenols or with fusible aldehyde condensation products, monohydric or polyhydric alcohols or mono- or polythio-alcohols or with compounds containing amino, amide, hydrazide or sulphonamide groups or salts of mono- or polycarboxylic aliphatic, cyclo-aliphatic or aromatic acids; reaction products of glycide or derivatives thereof with the chlorides of monopolybasic organic acids; reaction products of peracids with butadiene, vinylcyclohexane or terpenes or with unsaturated carboxylic acids, alcohols or esters; allyl glycide ether and 1, 3 epoxides and epoxypolyesters of high M.W. Compounds may be applied which form epoxy groups in situ or during the process of application. The epoxy compounds may be applied in solution in chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones esters or ethers or as aqueous emulsions. Hardeners may be included. Vinyl trichlorosilane or methacrylato chromic chloride may be applied together with the epoxy compound or before or afterwards. The fibres treated may be continuous filaments or staple or in the form of webs, strips, bands, mats, yarns or fabrics. The treated fibres may be used for the reinforcement of synthetic resins, e.g. of phenol, melamine or urea-aldehyde resins or unsaturated polyester resins.
