Abstract

Macromolecular polyacroleins having a molecular weight of 5,000 to 100,000 and containing more than 65% of reactive aldehyde groups in the form of aldehyde hydrate ester or semiacetal groups may be prepared by polymerizing acrolein or an a -alkyl acrolein in the presence of water and a redox catalyst. The catalyst may comprise hydrogen peroxide, an organic hydroperoxide, e.g. tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, cumol hydroperoxide, "Tetralin" (Registered Trade Mark) hydroperoxide or diphenylmethyl hydroperoxide, or a persulphate, e.g. potassium persulphate, sodium persulphate or ammonium persulphate, together with a salt of iron, silver or titanium, e.g. ferrous ammonium sulphate, silver nitrate or titanium trichloride, or a salt or ester of nitrous acid, e.g. sodium nitrite or isoamyl nitrite. The acroleins may be copolymerized with acrylonitrile, acrylamide, acrylic acid esters, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, chloroprene and isoprene. The products may be used for impregnating paper, textiles or leather, the treatment of fibres, films and artificial leathers, and in the production of cross-linking and emulsifying agents and corrosion inhibitors.
