Abstract

Butyl rubber and a high unsaturation rubber (such as natural rubber or a polymer of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile) are covulcanized by heating with a polymethylol, hydrocarbon substituted phenol resin and/or a halogenated derivative thereof. Optional ingredients are monomeric phenols, polychloroprene, processing or extending oils, fillers (such as carbon black, clays, and silicates), stearic acid and polyvalent metal compounds (MgO, ZnO, ZnCl, CaO, lead oxide and the stearates of Zn, Mg, Ca and Pb). Many phenol resins are listed and in the examples there are used a p-octyl phenol/formaldehyde condensation product and the brominated and chlorinated derivatives thereof. Applications specified are tyres, hoses, and curing bladders.
