Abstract

A composition for treating glass fibres comprises, by weight, (1) 50 to 60% of a liquid methyl polysiloxane containing an average of from 1,95 to 2,1 methyl radicals per Si atom and having a viscosity of from 10 to 1,000 c.s. at 25 DEG C., (2) 1 to 10% of a methyl polysiloxane having an average of more than 2 methyl radicals per Si atom and a viscosity of from 50,000 to 2,000,000 c.s. at 25 DEG C., (3) 0 to 10% of a liquid methyl polysiloxane resing having 1,2 to 1,7 methyl radicals per Si atom and containing CH3SiO 3/2 , (CH3)2SiO and (CH3)3SiO 1/2 units, (4) 1 to 15% of a finely divided silica, (5) 1 to 10% of a dimerised linoleic acid (see Group IV(b)), and the balance an inert solvent. Silicas specified are fume silicas, silica aerogels, estersils and silicas treated with siloxanes, as disclosed in Specification 806,563. In making the compositions the silica is first wetted with the low viscosity liquid siloxane before adding the other ingredients. The compositions may be dispersed in solvents, e.g. trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride or tetrachloroethane, or be emulsified in water using emulsifying agents such as those disclosed in Specification 777,078. An example is given. Specifications 586,187 and 586,956 also are referred to.ALSO:Glass fibres and glass cloth are treated, to prevent alkali migration of the glass and external alkali attack, to lubricate and improve the flexing, abrasion resistance and water-repellency thereof, with a composition comprising, by weight, (1) 50 to 60% of a liquid methylpolysiloxane containing an average of from 1,95 to 2,1 methyl radicals per Si atom and having a viscosity of from 10 to 1000 cs. at 25 DEG C., (2) 1 to 10% of a methylpolysiloxane having an average of more than 2 methyl radicals per Si atom and a viscosity of from 50,000 to 2,000,000 cs. at 25 DEG C., (3) 0 to 10% of a liquid methylpolysiloxane resin having 1,2 to 1,7 methyl radicals per Si atom and containing CH3SiO 3/2 , (CH3)2 SiO and (CH3)3 Si O 1/2 units, (4) 1 to 15% of a finely divided silica and (5) 1 to 10% of a dimerised linoleic acid, the balance being an inert solvent (see Group IV(a)). The composition may be applied as a dispersion in a solvent, e.g. trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride or tetrachloroethane, or as an aqueous emulsion, as by spraying on to the glass fibres after emerging from the spinnerettes. An example is given.
