Abstract
A liquid composition, for polishing smooth surfaces, particularly cars and furniture, comprises (a) an organopolysiloxane mixture consisting essentially of (1) 1 to 90 per cent by weight of the total siloxane content of a toluene-soluble methylpolysiloxane composed of trimethylsiloxane and SiO2 units in such proportions that the CH3/Si ratio is from 1.0 : 1 to 2.4 : 1; and (2) 10 to 99 per cent by weight of a liquid organopolysiloxane having a viscosity not exceeding 500,000 cs. at 25 DEG C., soluble in organic solvents, having from 1.5 to 2.1 organic radicals per Si atom, the radicals being saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon or aromatic hydrocarbon radicals, there being an average of not more than one aromatic hydrocarbon per Si atom and at least one of the defined radicals attached to each Si atom, and (b) a hydrocarbon solvent and/or emulsifying agent and water. Siloxanes (1) may be made by cohydrolysis of the corresponding silanes or by the process of Specification 706,719. Siloxanes (2) are well known and may contain as silicon-bonded radicals methyl, ethyl, propyl, octadecyl, phenyl, xenyl, benzyl, tolyl or cyclohexyl radicals. Solvents specified : naphthol mineral spirits, xylene and stoddard solvent. The compositions may be solutions or aqueous emulsions preferably containing from 0.15 to 15 per cent by weight of the defined siloxanes and up to 5 per cent of emulsifying agents and other additives, such as finely-divided silica, e.g. diatomaeous earth and tripoli silica, and organic waxes. Examples are given.
