Abstract

Methyl b -cyanoisobutyrate is prepared by reacting hydrocyanic acid and methyl methacrylate at superatmospheric pressures in the range of 50 to 2,000 p.s.i.g. and at a temperature in the range of 130 DEG to 300 DEG C. and in the presence of an alkaline catalyst whose aqueous 0,1 molar solution has a pH of at least 9. When the process is conducted batchwise, a temperature in the range of 130 DEG to 275 DEG C. is used, and when operating on a continuous basis, the preferred temperature range is from 175 DEG to 225 DEG C. Suitable alkaline catalysts are the alkali metals and their carbonates, alkali and alkaline earth metal alkoxides, oxides, hydroxides, peroxides and cyanides, tertiary amines and quaternary ammonium bases. The hydrocyanic acid may be introduced in the gaseous or liquid state or in a solution with methyl methacrylate. A polymerization inhibitor, such as hydroquinone may be added to prevent polymerization of methyl methacrylate when the most active catalyst or highest temperatures are employed. The methyl b -cyanoisobutyrate may be used as a solvent for polymers or as an intermediate.
