In an "I.F.F." system the friendly aircraft makes its identity known to the interrogating aircraft by transmitting a signal, in response to an interrogating signal of a certain frequency, which signal is applied to the radar receiver of the interrogating aircraft coincident in time with the receipt of an echo signal from the friendly aircraft, this echo signal resulting from a signal sent out from the radar transmitter at a point later in time than the interrogating signal and having a frequency different from the latter. To ensure coincidence of the signals at the radar receiver a time delay is introduced in the transmission circuit of the friendly aircraft and another time delay is introduced in the circuit applying the echo signal to the radar receiver, the sum of these two delays being equal to the delay between the transmission of the interrogating signal and the radar signal. The coincidence causes either the elimination of the echo signal from the radar screen or a change in its colour. The friendly aircraft transmits at a frequency different from that of the interrogating signals; however, the various frequencies are sufficiently close to permit employment of a single antenna. A switch permits operation of the radar transmitter in the normal manner when transmission of interrogating signals is, not required.
