Abstract

A regulator for controlling the air supply to vehicle air springs is operated by a lever 16, the movement of which is transmitted to a valve closure member 35 via a clutch 18, 19, 20. The latter is adapted to transmit only a limited torque. A flanged disc 20 rigid with the lever 16 is recessed to engage balls 23 which also engage recesses in a driven disc 19. A recess 32 in the disc 19 engages a collar 34 on the member 35 with predetermined lost motion. A recess 33 of the disc 19 engages a projection 75 carried by a dashpot piston 66. The valve closure member 35 is urged by a spring 58 into seating engagement with a valve member 48 which also seats under action of a spring 50 on a seat 44 of the regulator housing. In operation, on defection of the member 35 to the left (as viewed in Fig. 4) resulting from movement of the lever 16 due to increased vehicle load, the valve 48 while remaining seated on the member 35 is lifted off the seat 44. A recess 54 in the member 35 then connects a housing 45 to the left of the valve 48 (and which is connected at 53 with a source of air pressure) with a recess 55 connected via a socket 57 with the vehicle springs. On movement of the member 35 in the opposite direction, on decreasing vehicle load, air can pass from the vehicle springs via recesses 55 and 54 to a bore 41 within member 35 and thence to atmosphere via a filter 63.
