854,686. Venetian blind operating mechanisms. AVERY & CO. (Est. 1834) Ltd., J. Jan. 28, 1959 [Jan. 29, 1958], No. 2908/58. Class 20(3) A venetian blind operating mechanism by which the slats may be tilted and raised or lowered by the operation of a single cord in conjunction with a slipping frictional clutch comprises a shaft 16 mechanically or power driven through gearing 19 in bearings in U- shaped brackets 13 and having fixed thereon drums 17 for the lifting and lowering cords 18 provided with end cylindrical surfaces 171 in frictional contact with rollers 12 rotatable in elongated slots 131 in the brackets 13 and on which the ladder tapes 11 are looped and freely suspended so that on rotation of the shaft 16 clockwise to wind up the blind from the open position shown, the slats first tilt to the fully closed position, Fig. 4, and further tilting is prevented, whereupon slip between the surfaces 121, 171 (which may be rubber bands) enables the lifting cord 18 to be wound on the drum 17. Stop nuts 22 on a threaded portion 163 of the shaft 16 co-operating with the traversable nut 21 prevent overwinding in either direction.
