854,556. Making pipe-joint gaskets. INVENTEX Ltd. Feb. 20, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958], No. 5928/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVI] In a method of making a gasket ring for a pipe joint, which ring is to act in conjunction with the tapered cone of a connecting-member and a pressure or clamping member and which by axial displacement of a cutting-edge at the front end is to cut into the outer surface of the pipe to be connected, pressure is applied on the previously-shaped front end of the ring by a skewed roller 5 or skewed rollers, a relative rotational motion and, if necessary, also a relative motion in an axial direction being provided so that plastic deformation of the material occurs. The rear part 1 of a gasket-ring engages in the joint with a cap-nut, a part 2 is outwardly tapered and the front portion 3 of the ring is initially formed parallel cylindrical as in Fig. 1 (not shown), the forward end having a profile 4 and a cutting-edge 8. The part 3 is then skew-rolled to the form of Fig. 2 so that the outer surface may engage with a connecting- member (not shown) with a conical bore, the cutting-edge 8 being at the same time set to the required angle for biting into the pipe on assembly of the joint. The surface of the skew roller or rollers may be convex or concave. Specification 688,744 and 840,164 are referred to.
