Burnt gases from a gas- or other fuel-fired appliance 1 enter a casing 3 divided into two compartments, open at the bottom 4, by a baffle 6 extending from the top and sides of the casing and having a damper controlled aperture 7 of approximately the same dimensions as a flue outlet 5 in the outer compartment. The damper 8 may be manually or pneumatically controlled or as shown mounted on a heat-sensitive element 8a and is of such a size in relation to the aperture 7 that an annular passage remains when the damper is in the fully closed position. Excessive fire draught causes the element 8a to close the damper 8, cold air being drawn through the inlet 4. This air flow may be controlled by a second damper 9 which as shown has a heat-sensitive element 9a and may be independently controlled or linked to the damper 8 so that, for instance, as the damper 8 moves to the closed position in excess draught conditions the damper 9 moves to open the inlet 4 and vice versa. The outlet 5 has a spigot or socket 5a of dimensions to receive the standard flue pipe or chimney.
