This invention relates to a draft hood for use in connection with a gas burning appliance, such as a gas furnace.
In the installation of a gas burner appliance, such for example as a furnace, it is necessary to connect a draft hood between the device and the chimney flue. VSuch draft hoods serve the purpose of allowing ready escape of the gases from the gas appliance when the chimney becomes obstructed, or when because of wind or other similar causes there is developed a downdraft in the chimney. They alsoserve to prevent a back-draft from entering'the appliance, and in cases where there is excessive up-draft through the chimney they neutralize the effect of the stack action of the chimney upon the operation of the appliance.
Due to the varying conditions in the installation of gas burner appliances, it is necessary in certain cases to employ. a vertical draft hood,
While in other cases it is necessary to employ` a horizontal draft hood. Previous to the present invention, the draft hoods designed for operation in a vertical position have not been satisfactory for installation in horizontal position, and vice versa the draft hoods designed for operation in a horizontal position have not been satisfactory for installation in a vertical position. The result is that previous to thepresent invention a proper draft hood for a gas furnace appliance could not be supplied until full knowledge Was received as to the nature of the essential connections between the appliance and the chirnney or stack.
It is the general object of the present invention to provide a draft hood capable of being installed either in a horizontal or vertical position, or any position between vertical and horizontal, whereby it becomes possible for the dealer in gas furnace appliances to provide, in the sale of such appliances, a proper hood for installation of the same, which hood can be successfully installed and operated in any desired position.
The hood of the present invention is capable `of complying with the Listing requirements for draft hoods, approved September .1.8, 1933, by the American Standards Association, and is capable of simple modifications in order to correspond with any other desired standards.
The draft hood of the present invention, together with various further objects and advantages of the same, will best be understood from a description of a preferred form or example of the same. For this reason, I have hereinafter installation of the draft hood of the present in-v vention in the horizontal position.
Referring to the drawing, the draft hood of the present invention comprises a conduit member- 2 for conducting gases from the inlet pipe to the outlet, and for this purpose the conduit 2 is indicated as preferably in the form of a round pipe having at its ends beads 3 and 4 and crimped portions 5 and 6, by means of which the same may be readily installed as a section of any flue pipe connection. The draft hood further comprises a skirt 1 joined laterally to the conduit 2, as indicated at 8, and opening thereinto, and is provided with a relief opening 9 for providing for the escape of products of combustion in the event of no draft, back draft, or stoppage beyond the draft hood, and also operated to relieve the gas heating appliance from the effects of excessive up-draft by providing for the entrance of air.
The skirt 1 of the draft hood of the present invention, in addition to being joined laterally to the main conduit connects therewith at an acute angle with reference to the axis of the conduit member 2. Within the member 2 there is provided a bafe member l0 connected to the wall of the conduit 2 opposite the point of connection of the skirt l and at a point near the inlet end 6 of the draft hood, and extending at a slant towards the opening of the skirt a suitable distance, such as approximately to the axis of the conduit 2 or slightly beyond the same. A second baffle I is provided connected to the conduit member 2 at substantially the point where the skirt l joins the conduit 2 at the inlet end of the conduit which supplemental baille Il extends at a slant upwardly approximately towards the center of the conduit 2 for a short distance only.
In the installation of the draft hood of the present invention in a vertical position, as indicated at Figure 4, the draft hood is connected to the flue pipe l2 of the gas heating appliance.

In this position, it is found that due to the association and relationship between the bailles l and II and the acute angle at which skirt 'l connects with the conduit member 2 a satisfactory draft hood action is secured; that is to say, in normal operation the gases from the furnace pass upwardly to strike the baille lil, from which they are directed somewhat towards the relief opening 9, but with a proper draft chimney are directed back to the outlet of the conduit member 2, thence to the chimney by the slanting wall l5 of the skirt. However, in the case of a back draft the design permits the ready escape of the gases from the furnace through the relief opening 9. In case of excessive up-draft the slanting position of the skirt 'l and the position of the baille I0 and supplemental baille Il permits ready relief of the gas burner appliance from such excessive draft.
When the conditions of the installation indicate the requirement for installation in a horizontal position, the draft hood of the present invention is installed as indicated in Figure 5 where the draft hood is indicated as positioned with the skirt of the same extending downwardly. In this position, it possesses substantially identical characteristics to its operation in the vertical position. In this respect, the draft hood of the present invention departs radically from the draft hoods in general use inasmuch as draft hoods in general use have radically different characteristics when installed in vertical and horizontal positions.
While the particular form of the draft hood herein described for the purpose of illustrating the present invention is well adapted to carry out the objects of the present invention, it is to be understood that various modifications and changes may be made without departing from the principles of the invention, and the present invention includes all such modifications and changes as come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A draft hood capable of being installed either in a horizontal or vertical position, said draft hood in the vertical position comprising a tubular conduit member having openings at its ends for connection with a chimney flue system and having an aperture at oneside, an upwardly sloping baffle within the conduit member extending from the side opposite the aperture towards said aperture, an upwardly sloping supplemental baille extending from the aperture side of the conduit below the first-mentioned baffle, and a skirt joined to said conduit member at said aperture and sloping downwardly to provide a relief opening.
2. A draft hood capable of being installed either in a horizontal or vertical position, said draft hood in the vertical position comprising a conduit member having inlet and outlet openings for connection with a ue pipe system and having an .aperture at one side, an upwardly sloping baille within said conduit extending from a side opposite said aperture towards said aperture to the approximate center of said conduit, an upwardly sloping supplemental baille extending from the aperture side of said conduit positioned below said first-mentioned baille, said supplemental baffle being relatively short compared with said first-mentioned baille, and a skirt joined to said conduit member at said aperture and sloping downwardly and providing a relief opening.
3. A draft hood capable of being installed either in a horizontal or vertical position, said draft hood in the vertical position comprising a conduit member having openings at its end for connection with a flue pipe system and having an aperture at one side, an upwardly sloping baille within said conduit member extending from the side opposite said aperture towards said aperture, the end of said baille being opposite substantially the center of said aperture, an upwardly sloping supplemental baille extending from the aperture side of said conduit and positioned below said rstmentioned baille, said supplemental baille being comparatively short with respect to said first mentioned baille, and a `skirt attached to said conduit at said aperture and sloping downwardly to provide a relief opening.
4. A draft hood capable of being installed in a horizontal or vertical position, said draft hood in the vertical position comprising a conduit for connection with a. flue pipe system and having an aperture at its side, an upwardly sloping baille extending from the side of said conduit opposite said aperture, said baille extending to approximately the center of said conduit and having its end opposite approximately the center of said aperture, a supplemental upwardly sloping baille joined to said conduit adjacent said aperture and positioned below said rst-mentioned baille and extending for a short distance compared with said first mentioned baille, and a skirt joined to said conduit at said aperture and sloping downwardly and providing a relief opening.
