Abstract
854,078. Steering vehicles. BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION. July 16, 1959 [July 25, 1958], No. 24116/58. Class 79(5). A steering mechanism comprises a steering column 10 fixed to a gear 11 and rotatably mounted in a gear carrier plate 17 movably supported upon a frame 12 and having rotatably mounted thereon gears 15, 16 driven directly or indirectly by the gear 11, wheel shafts 18, 19 rotatably mounted in the frame and carrying road wheels 22, 23 and levers 24, 25 provided with driving pins 26, 27 working in slots 28 and 29 in the gears 15, 16, and one or more eccentrics 30, 31 rotatable by the steering column and serving to displace the plate 17 relatively to the frame in such a manner that the axes of the gears 15, 16 depart increasingly from positions of coincidence with the wheel shaft axes as the road wheels are turned from the straight ahead position. The eccentrics are carried by the gears 15, 16 and engage slots 32, 33 in the frame to pivot the plate 17 about the axis of the column 10. Stops may be provided to limit the rotation of shafts 18, 19, flats being cut on the gears to eliminate those parts which do not engage and the gear 11 may have a different diameter from, the gears 15, 16. In a second embodiment the eccentrics move the plate 17 in a direction perpendicular to a line joining the axes of the shafts 18, 19.
