[Also in Group XXIV] A synchronism detector for use during changing speed in a stepped change-speed gear 2, 3, comprises input and output-driven generators 474, 470, supplying current proportional to the speeds of the input and output shafts 2, 3 of the main gear, to speed-responsive rotatable discs 478, 472, the input-driven disc 478 being energized through a selected one of four capacitors 477 to give a transmission ratio between the generator 474 and disc 478 corresponding to each one of the four ratios of the main transmission 2, 3, whereby the electrical output which it receives can be made equal to that received by the output-driven disc 472 in each of the ratios of the main transmission. During a change in ratio in the main transmission, which is initiated manually or by unspecified automatic means, that one of the capacitors giving a ratio corresponding to the ratio to be established is switched in, and when the required ratio is synchronized the speed-responsive discs 478, 472 receive equal outputs, causing slots 479, 473 therein to align and pass a beam from a light source 481 to a photo-cell 482, the output of which, amplified at 483, opens a solenoid-valve, which operates fluid-pressure gear-shift means as described in Specification 851,996. In Fig. 2, the rectified speed-responsive output of output- and input-driven generators 491, 492 passes respectively directly and through a selected one of four resistors 497 corresponding to each ratio of the gear, to separate opposing windings of a relay 496, which, when the windings are equally energized consequent on the attainment of synchronism, is closed by a spring 495 and operates a solenoid valve as above. In Fig. 3, not shown, the windings of a similar relay are energized by the windings of the rotor and stator of a generator which are respectively driven by the input and output shafts of the gear.
