Abstract
853,646. Gas-turbine plant. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 27, 1959 [April 29, 1958], No. 14223/59. Class 110 (3). A debris guard 27 at the annular air intake opening of an aircraft gas-turbine engine is formed of a readily deformable or flexible foraminous material, such as woven wire mesh, preferably supported by ribs 29, and is pivotally supported on the inner cylindrical wall 16 of the air intake passage by means of hinges 30. In the extended position shown, the guard 27 is of substantially frusto-conical shape so that intercepted debris is funnelled inwardly into a debris trap 32, thereby avoiding clogging of the wire mesh. The debris remains in the trap 32 until it is removed during routine engine inspection or servicing. To bring the debris guard 27 into its inoperative position clear of the air intake passage, the debris trap 32 is moved rearwardly by means of an actuator 39 and acts through links 36 to pivot the ribs 29 about the hinges 30 so that the guard 27 is closed to substantially cylindrical shape. A hollow fairing 21 is then moved rearwardly into abutment with the wall 16 by means of an actuator 24, thereby enclosing the debris guard 27.
