Abstract

<PICT:0853616/III/1> <PICT:0853616/III/2> Apparatus for coating plate- or strip-shaped articles with lacquer, in which the lacquer is circulated by a pump through a supply container, a quantity control device from which issues a flowing curtain of lacquer, and a collecting trough, is provided with an automatically-operating overflow air-removing means, the correct operation of which can be monitored in an outlet tube connecting the said means to the supply container. As shown in Fig. 1, articles are fed from position 11 to position 111 by conveyers 22, 23, through a curtain 2 of lacquer issuing from a control device 4. Excess lacquer falls on to an inclined plate 14 and is collected in a trough 13, after which it flows through a filter and falls on to inclined plates 26 in a supply container 16. It is then circulated by a variable-speed pump 8 through filters 18 and 19 and a pipe 17, to an overflow container 5, whence it passes through pipe 221 to the regulating arrangement 4. For avoiding over-pressure and discharging absorbed air, there is provided a further duct 9, in which a thermometer 33 is inserted, between the device 4 and container 5; air collecting in the latter can discharge through the tube 6, together with surplus lacquer which is collected in a funnel 7 and returned to the container 16 through duct 27. In a modification, the air and surplus lacquer are not returned to the container 5, but pass directly from the device 4 to the container 16, through a system of ducts providing an open inspection point. The device 4, as shown in Fig. 3, comprises a housing containing shells 10, 11, which provide a gap 3, variable by one or more members 34, below, and sealed by members 12 above.
