Abstract

853,588. Photographic films. AGFA A. G April 17, 1958 [April 18, 1957], No. 12241/58. Class 98(2) [Also in Group VIII] Photographic film comprising a film-forming thermoplastic polycarbonate support is subbed with a mixture of gelatine and a polymer or copolymer of a mono-ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing hydroxyl groups. The polymer may be obtained by partial saponification of an ester of polyvinyl alcohol or polyallyl alcohol, or of such an ester copolymerized with a mono-ethylenically unsaturated compound which is not saponifiable, or there may be used a copolymer of a mono-ethylenically unsaturated monomer with a similar monomer containing hydroxyl groups. The monomer free of hydroxyl groups may be a vinyl ester, styrene, vinyl naphthalene, p-chlorostyrene, pmethylstyrene, a-methylstyrene, acrylonitrile, an ester of acrylic, methacrylic or fumaric acid, or a monovinyl ether, and the monomer containing hydroxyl groups may be allyl alcohol, p-hydroxystyrene, or a monovinyl ether of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, glycerol, or trimethylol propane. The polycarbonate support may be derived from a di(monohydroxyaryl) alkane, a di(monohydroxyaryl) sulphone, a di(monohydroxyaryl) ether or thio-ether, or from a mixture of a di(monohydroxyaryl) compound with an aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic dihydroxy compound. The polycarbonates may be those described in Specifications 808,629 and 853,587. A solvent or swelling agent for the polycarbonate such as methylene chloride, chloroform or trichloroethylene may be included in the gelatin/ polymer coating composition, which may contain also an organic acid stabilizer and a hardening agent. In the examples, the polymer in the subbing layer is a partially hydrolysed vinyl chloride/vinyl propionate copolymer, a partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate or a copolymer of styrene and allyl alcohol. Specifications 772,627, 808,485, 808,486, 808,487, 808,488 and 808,490 also are referred to.
