Abstract
853,488. Induction heating. BIRLEC Ltd. Feb. 11, 1957 [Feb. 11, 1956], No. 4336/56. Class 39(3). An electric induction furnace for heat treating metal billets or similar workpieces and comprising at least one multi-turn coil into which a workpiece may be inserted, has, in association with each coil, a metal slug and means adapted to insert the slug into the coil simultaneously with a workpiece to be heated. Provided the length of the workpiece is less than that of the coil, the slug projects partly or wholly into the coil after each feeding operation, and even heating of the workpiece results. As shown, mechanism for feeding the workpieces into a coil includes an axially reciprocable rod 1 on which is secured a cylindrical copper slug 2. A removable hard-wearing metal disc 5 is provided at the end of the rod adjacent the coil and engages an end of a workpiece which is pushed endwise into the coil and against a locating stop. The slug may be cooled by passing coolant through ducts 6 which extend into an annular duct 7. Each coil may be a single multi-turn coil or a number of multiturn coils arranged end-to-end.
