Abstract

853,197. Hydraulic transmission of power. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. June 1, 1959 [June 6, 1958], No. 18594/59. Class 69 (2). An hydrostatic drive for the wheels of a vehicle comprises at least one swash-plate piston pump 12 driven by the engine 10 or other source of power, and axial-piston motors 15, 15<1> which drive the wheels on the same axle and are arranged so that the axial forces developed by the motors are opposed to one another and taken by an interposed thrust bearing 19. The engine may drive two pumps 12, 13 which are disposed at a constant angle or are adjustable individually or together and supply liquidpressure to the motors 15, 15<1>. The swash-plates 16, 161 of the motors are secured to countershafts connected by gearing 17, 171 to halfshafts 14, 14<1> of the same axle, and the thrust bearing 19 is interposed between the gears to take-up the axial thrusts of the motors. A fluid-operated friction-disc clutch 20 may be disposed between the gears 17, 17<1> and is engaged to connect the half-shafts together or disengaged to permit relative rotation therebetween. The pumps may also drive additional motors on another axle, the motors having an interposed thrust ring and coupling. The motors may be angularly adjustable individually or as a whole and a further coupling provided between the couplings of the two shafts so that the power from all the motors may be directed to a single wheel.
