852,810. Binaural systems. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 13, 1957 [Sept. 15, 1956], No. 28265/56. Class 40 (4). In a binaural system of the " sum-anddifference" type described in Specification 394,325, monaural signals from a channel 6 are divided between the binaural channels 4 and 5 in a proportion and phase relationship determined by the position of slider 9 on a potentiometer 7, so that the monaural signals are given a desired directional significance. Isolating amplifiers 12 and 13 are provided. Instead of the resistive potentiometer 7, some other suitable means, such as a goniometer, magslip, or sinecosine potentiometer, may be used. Further, the monaural signals from channel 6 may be combined directly with the " sum " signals in channel 4, the potentiometer or other means being used for deriving from the monaural signals another set of signals of appropriate amplitude and phase to be combined with the " difference " signals in channel 5.
