Abstract

1414166 Quadraphonic systems BRITISH BROADCASTING CORP 4 July 1973 [28 July 1972] 35467/72 Heading H4R A quadraphonic system operates with a three channel transmission signal, one of the signals being an omnidirection sum signal and the other two signals being signals dependent on the position of a sound source with repect to respective different axes. The signals may be derived from two pairs of microphones, each microphone having a cardioid directional characteristic Fig. 2, with the sum signals from each pair providing the omnidirection signal, either by taking one only of the sum signals, or by averaging the sum signals, the other two signals being derived from the difference of the signals of the microphones in each pair. Alternatively a single omnidirectional microphone can provide the omnidirectional sum signal and two microphones having "figure of eight" characteristics with the axes at right angles, one to the other, can provide the other two signals. For reproduction the omnidirectional signal is combined with each of the other signals in sum and difference to provide four output signals. For transmission by broadcast the two difference signals can modulate quadrature carriers transmitted with the sum signal to provide a signal which is compatible with the conventional stereo broadcasts. On reproduction the ratio of the sum to the difference signal can be modified to vary the apparent sound stage size.
