1303021 Stereophonic systems SANSUI ELECTRIC CO Ltd 19 May 1971 [21 May 1970 (2) 24 June 1970 (7) 25 Sept 1970] 15855/71 Heading H4R In a sound reproduction system a " presence " signal is derived from the normal output signal, phase modulated by a very low frequency signal, and reproduced by a loudspeaker or loudspeakers located at the rear of the listening area. The presence signal may be derived straight from the signal in a monophonic system, from the difference between the R and L channel signals in a stereo signal, from the rear signals in a discrete four channel system, or two presence signals may be derived, as shown in Fig. 1, from R and L channel stereo signals by taking the differences R - #L and L - #R where # is between 0 and 1, and where the signals fed to the two front speakers are R+ #L and L + #R. The low frequency signal to phase modulate the presence signal, or signals, can be derived by envelope detecting the programme signal.
