Abstract

852,580. Centrifugal pumps. HUNTER, M. W. April 4, 1957, No. 10996/57. Class 110 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] In a pump, which may be used for delivering milk under pressure to cream separators by means of a disc 50 inclined to the axis of the rotor 62, the disc is driven by magnetic means and the fluidpumping chamber is separated from the driving elements by a thin wall allowing the passage of magnetic flux. The pump casing 10 is of magnetic material, e.g. iron and is secured by a bracket 13 of non-magnetic metal to an electric motor 14, the pump and motor being mounted on a base 15. A cap 16, removable for cleaning purposes and closing the pumping chamber, is held in place by a bar 33 hooked over a projection on the casing 10 and having projections bearing against the cap when a wing-nut is tightened to press a sealing gasket 32 surrounding a hub 30 of the cap against a cylindrical member 27, which defines the pump cavity. A partition 21, dividing the pumping chamber from the driving elements, has an aperture which receives a flange on the member 27 and a thin diaphragm 43 of magnetic metal closes the aperture and is secured to an annular seating 44 of the member 27, e.g. by welding or brazing. The diaphragm 43 and the hub 30 are frustoconical and form bearing-surfaces for the disc 50, which disc has a rib 57 defining a guide surface which in conjunction with the edge 60 on tne diaphragm centres the disc when in motion. The rotor 62 is of magnetic material having an integral cranked projection 64 balanced by a projection 69 of non-magnetic material (brass), the outer ends of the projections 64, 69 being shaped to conform with the diaphragm and separated therefrom by a small air-gap. A sleeve 67 of magnetic material surrounds the rotor and is spaced from the rotor by an air-gap. Between the sleeve and the casing is an annular coil 66, whereby, when the rotor 62 is driven, a magnetic flux is produced and drives the disc 50 to convey fluid entering through an inlet 55 in the cap 16 to a passage 42 extending radially outwards from the member 27 through an openended slot in the casing. The reduced neck of the inlet may be threaded for attachment of a conduit from a gravity feed source and the outer end of the passage 42 is threaded for connection to a conduit. U.S.A. Specifications 2,033,577 and 2,788,747 are referred to.
