Abstract
To a casting drum 1 for the production of flat film of organic thermoplastic material there is rigidly attached at one side a worm wheel 2 of diameter not substantially less than that of the drum, the drum being rotatable on its axle and the worm wheel being provided with and meshing with a first pair of worms 3, 31 located substantially on opposite sides of the worm wheel p and of the same hand and rotatable in opposite directions; these worms are each rigidly attached <PICT:0852491/IV(a)/1> to and concentric with the shaft 4, 41 of one each of a pair of worm wheels 5, 51, which mesh each with one of a second pair of worms 6, 61 which are of appropriately opposite hand and are rigidly attached to a common shaft 7 provided with means by which it may be rotated at high speed. The common shaft may be adjustable along the line of its axis, for example by means of a yoke 10, to take up backlash in the gear system. The worm 3 or 31 may be made to slide along splines in its shaft, while normally being held in position by a coil spring working against a collar. A similar device may be applied to worms 6 and 61, or a coiled spring buffer device may be inserted between wheels 5 and 51 and their shafts, to give limited recoil. Alternatively, any or all of these cushioning devices may be replaced by a spring giving axial thrust to the shaft 7. The coating drum may be cooled by conventional methods, preferably by internal water-cooling.
