Abstract
Allo-isocitric acid is prepared by cultivating a strain of fungus selected from Penicillium purpurogenum stoll var. rubrisclerotium Thom (sclerotia producing strains), Penicillium sclerotiorum van Beyma, Penicillium expansum (Link) Thom, Penicillium verruculosum Peyronel and Penicillium aculeatum Raper and Fennell, under aerobic conditions in a nutrient fermentation medium containing a saccharidic material, inorganic salts and a nitrogen source and recovering allo-isocitric acid from the fermented medium. Fermentation temperatures of 20 to 35 DEG C. may be used. Calcium carbonate may be added to the medium. The product may be isolated as the calcium salt.
