Class 98(1) In photographic type-composing apparatus comprising a projection system for forming in an image plane images of matrix characters selectively disposed in a projection position, such system includes a movable support carrying a plurality of lenses, and means is provided for locating said support in each of a plurality of selected positions in each of which an individual lens on the support is located in an operative position for the formation of a matrix-character image, some of said lenses being adapted for the formation of their respective images at locations displaced from "a normal location in said image plane", by which is meant that location in the image plane in which any particular matrix character image must be formed to result in a corresponding character image being normally located with respect to a common base line of other characters in the same line on a photosensitive surface which may, but need not, be coincident with the image plane. By this arrangement, a character H in normal position (Fig. 3) may be provided with a superscript 2, a subscript 5, and inferiors and superiors 3, 6 and 1, 4 therefore The normal position character may be in one of several different point sizes while typically the superscript and subscript are in a small point size and their inferiors in a somewhat smaller size. As shown, the various lenses for producing such an arrangement of images are carried on a disc 20 rotatable about a fixed axis 22 and provided with recesses 24 engageable by a spring-pressed rod (Fig. 1 not shown) to locate the selected lens in operative position in the projection system. Lenses 6-0, ...., 36-0 centred on the circle 25 provide normally positioned characters of different sizes from 6 to 36- point; lenses 6-2, 6-5 provide 6-point superscript and subscripts respectively; and lenses 5-1, 5-3, 5-4, 5-6 provide 5-point superiors and inferiors thereto.
