Abstract

The invention comprises chemical compounds having the formula : <FORM:0851951/IV(b)/1> in which Y is oxygen or sulphur ; A is an alkylene chain having 2 to 6 carbon atoms separating the nitrogens to which it is attached by at least 2 carbon atoms ; and R1 and R2 represent hydrogen or alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or when taken together with the nitrogen to which they are attached, form a 5 to 6-membered heterocyclic ring and the nontoxic salts thereof. These compounds may be obtained by alkylating a 10-unsubstituted phenothiazine with a reactive dialkylaminoalkyl ester, e.g. the chloride or bromide or p-toluene sulphonate. Subsequently a salt may be formed with non-toxic organic and inorganic acids. Other routes for the preparation of the free bases are described. Examples illustrate the preparation of 10-substituted-2-trifluoromethyl-mercaptophenothiazines bearing in 10-position, 3-dimethylaminopropyl, 3-(41-methyl-11-piperazinyl)-propyl, 3-(N-hydroxyethylpiperazinyl)-propyl, 3-(N-acetoxyethylpiperazinyl)-propyl, 3-(N-hydroxyethoxyethylpiperazinyl)-propyl, 3-dimethylamino-2-methylpropyl, and the corresponding 2-trifluoromethoxyphenothiazines bearing in 10-position, 3-dimethylaminopropyl, 3-(41-methyl-11-piperazinyl)-propyl, 3-(N-hydroxyethylpiperazinyl)-2-methylpropyl, 3-(N-acetoxyethylpiperazinyl)-2-methylpropyl and 3-(41-methyl-11-piperazinyl)-2-methylpropyl.
