Class 65(1) A hatchway cover, comprising one or more pairs of hinged-together panels 10, 11 which can be moved between a hatch-closing position, in which they lie in a common plane, and an open position, in which they are substantially vertical with their undersides facing each other, is operated by one or more groups of two extensible and contractable actuators 21, 22, one actuator of each group being pivotally connected at one end to one of the panels and the other actuator of the group being pivotally connected at one end to the other panel, and the other ends of the actuators being pivotally connected to a part 18 which is itself pivotally connected to one of the panels to turn about an axis 17 parallel to, but offset from, the hinge axis 15 between the panels. The part 18, which is T-shaped, is not symmetrical about the stem of the T, the ends of the actuators which are pivoted to the part being equidistant from the hinge axis 15 when the cover is closed. The actuators may be fluid pressure rams, as shown, or screw jacks operated by electric motors, and are preferably located within the thickness of the panels.
