Abstract
The invention comprises 2 : 3 : 5 : 6-tetrachloro-p-xylylene-dithioacetic acid (see Group IV(b)), which may be condensed with a polyhydric alcohol under polymerization conditions. The diesters of the acid may be used as plasticizers and for reducing the inflammability of the material in which they are incorporated.ALSO:The invention comprises 2 : 3 : 5 : 6-tetrachloro-p-xylylene-dithioacetic acid of formula <FORM:0851747/IV(b)/1> and salts and esters thereof. They may be used to form polyesters and in polymerisable compositions (see Group IV(a)). In an example 2 : 3 : 5 : 6-tetrachloro-1 : 4-di(chloromethyl)-benzene is added to a stirred mixture of thioglycollic acid, water, sodium hydroxide, and ethanol ; the mixture is further stirred with heating, cooled, the sodium salt filtered off, and converted into the free acid.
